As the national capital continues to battle the outbreak of dengue year after year, the Dialogue and Development Commission (DDC) of Delhi recommended to the Delhi government a multi-pronged strategy to tackle the vector-borne disease, including hosting trials of the Wolbachia model of vector control and reviewing of building laws to keep premises free of mosquito-breeding.
The DDC, the advisory body set up by the AAP government on March 15, 2015, submitted a report on dengue control to the Delhi government on May 25. The report is among 70 such reports on various subjects submitted by the DDC over a year and a half. In the seven-page report, the DDC proposed that the government allow case studies and field trials of new techniques and internationally acclaimed measures to find solutions to liRecommending the field trials of the Wolbachia model of vector control, the commission explained that in this technique, colonies of the Aedes Aegypti — the mosquito that carries the dengue virus — are inoculated with naturally occurring bacteria called Wolbachia, infecting them and making them incapable of breeding. “This cuts short the lifespan of the insects and slowly leads to reduction in the density of the population of Aedes Aegypti mosquitoes,” the report stated.
The Wolbachia model adopted by China, Singapore and Australia, the DDC stated, requires no regulation.
Recommending the review and tweaking of building bylaws and making owners and builders responsible for keeping premises mosquito-breeding free, the DDC observed that “as compared to other metros, building bylaws in Delhi are lax.” It advised taking punitive measures for those flouting norms and risking lives.
The recommendations also include a dengue platform created by IT experts for collecting and disseminating complete information on dengue.mit vector breeding.
